Hair oil treatment: how to do it before shampooing

Pre-shampoo hair oil treatment: dry or wet hair, how long to leave it on, how to rinse it out properly and how often to do it.

Hair oil treatment: how to do it before shampooing

The short answer

A hair oil treatment is done on dry hair: apply the oil to the roots, massage the scalp for a few minutes, leave on as directed on the bottle, then apply shampoo directly to the oiled hair before rinsing.

Many of us learned the oil treatment at home. Done well, it is a real moment of care. Rinsed badly, it leaves hair heavy. Here is how to get it right.

Preferably on dry hair

Oil and water do not mix. On hair that is already wet, oil spreads less evenly. So apply it to dry hair, detangled beforehand.

Start with the roots

Divide your hair into a few sections. Apply the oil along the parting, section by section, then massage the scalp with your fingertips in small circles for a few minutes. This massage is part of the care: it invites you to slow down.

How long should you leave it on?

Follow the time stated on your bottle. Wrapping your hair in a warm towel makes the moment more pleasant. Avoid sleeping with an oil that is not designed for it.

Rinsing well: the secret

Apply shampoo directly to the still-oiled hair, before adding much water. Work it into a lather, then rinse. A second light shampoo is often needed to get clean, light hair.

How often?

Frequency depends on your hair and on the product instructions. Once a week is a good starting point to make it a regular ritual without weighing hair down.

Our Repousse+ oil is designed for this step, and the roots duo pairs it with Fortigrow shampoo for rinsing.

If your scalp is irritated or sensitive, or if hair loss worries you, ask a dermatologist before starting a new treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply oil to wet hair?

You can, but oil spreads less evenly on wet hair. On dry hair it is easier to apply to the roots.

How long should I leave the oil on?

Follow the time stated on your bottle. Avoid sleeping with an oil that is not designed for it.

Why does my hair stay greasy after an oil treatment?

Usually the rinse is not thorough enough. Apply shampoo to the oiled hair before wetting it, then do a second light shampoo.
